What is the TULSA Procedure?

The TULSA Procedure, which stands for Transurethral Ultrasound Ablation, is an incision-free procedure that uses directional ultrasound to ablate targeted prostate tissue. The procedure is performed in a Magnetic Resonance Imaging (MRI) suite and uses the TULSA-PRO® system to ablate cancerous prostate tissue. The procedure combines real-time MRI with robotically driven directional thermal ultrasound to deliver predictable, physician-prescribed ablation of whole-gland or partial prostate tissue.

What diseases does it treat?

• Prostate cancer
• BPH (Enlarged Prostate)
• Trouble urinating
• Frequent urination
• Reduced sex drive
• Other prostate diseases

What are the advantages?

The TULSA Procedure is radiation-free, incision-free and allows patients the ability to avoid surgery. It is personalized based on the patient’s unique anatomy and prostate disease. Precise physician planning before the procedure enables the physician to avoid and protect critical structures around the prostate, minimizing the risk of side effects. This one-time, outpatient procedure lasts only a few hours and patients are able to return back to their normal lifestyle within days.

How does the TULSA Procedure work?

First, the doctor will conduct a PET CT scan in order to determine the location of the diseased tissue within and around the prostate gland. Once the doctor has deemed you a good candidate for the procedure, you will be brought in and put under general anesthesia so that you will be asleep during the entire procedure. Next, the doctor will deliver a high-energy ultrasound to destroy the damaged tissue in the prostate gland. Once the hour-long procedure is complete, you will spend the next couple of hours waking up and getting ready to return home. After the procedure is completed, individuals are able to return to normal activities within a few days with little to no side effects.
